■ 시리즈의 내용

A Series of Unfortunate Events (1999 – 2006) is a collection of 13 books by American author, Daniel Handler, under the penname, Lemony Snicket. The bestselling series follows the lives of the Baudelaire orphans, Violet, Klaus, and Sunny, who must navigate the various misfortunes and tragedies that befall them after the death of their parents. The series examines these unhappy and sometimes dark circumstances through the eyes of three resilient and 
inventive protagonists who work together to escape their unfortunate situations. The books do not shy away from sadness but teach young readers how to find tools and make use of knowledge, humor, and perseverance to cope with sudden life changes and feelings of helplessness.

A Series of Unfortunate Events (레모니 스니켓의 '위험한 대결')는 미국 소설가인 다니엘 핸들러(필명 레노니 스티켓)의 13편으로 이루어진 컬렉션입니다. 이 시리즈는 부모님들의 죽음으로 고아가 된 바이올렛, 클라우스, 서니, 세 남매가 닥쳐오는 갖가지 불운과 불행을 이기고 나아가는 이야기입니다. 자신들의 불행한 상황을 헤쳐 나가기 위해 함께 노력하는, 이 회복력 좋고 창의적인 세 주인공들의 눈에 비치는 불행과 어두운 상황을 새롭게 보여줍니다. 이 시리즈는 슬픔을 극복하고, 갑작스러운 삶의 변화와 무력감에 대처하기 위해 어떻게 방법을 찾으며 지식과 유머와 인내를 활용하는가를 알려줍니다.

The first book of the series, The Bad Beginning, introduces the three Baudelaire children to its readers and explains how they came to be orphans. The children, who have also lost their home, are forced to live in a dilapidated
house with a distant and sinister relative, Count Olaf, who mistreats them and concocts nefarious schemes to
try and steal their inheritance. Violet, Klaus, and Sunny must rely on each other, conduct research, and take
initiative to improve their lives and defeat the count.

이 시리즈의 첫번째 책, 'The Bad Beginning'은 이 세 어린이들을 독자들에게 소개하고, 그들이 어떻게 고아가 되었는지 설명합니다. 집도 잃은 어린이들은 먼 친척인 올라프 백작과 황폐한 집에서 살아야 합니다. 올라프는 그들을 학대하고 그들의 유산을 훔치려는 사악한 계략을 꾸밉니다. 바이올렛, 클라우스, 서니는 서로 의지하며 그들의 삶을 개선하고 백작을 물리치기 위해 방안을 생각해 내고 주도권을 잡아야 합니다.

Of interest to English language learners, is the fact that the author, Daniel Handler, pays particular attention to
characters’ use and understanding of words in the novel. Since characters and the narrator often explain the
meaning of words and how to use them, young readers can naturally learn more about English as they engage
with the text.

영어를 학습하는 사람들이 관심을 가지는 것은 작가인 다니엘 핸들러가 소설 속 인물들의 단어 사용과 이해에 특히 신경을 쓴다는 사실입니다. 등장 인물과 해설자가 단어의 의미와 사용법을 설명하는 경우가 많기 때문에, 젊은 독자들은 텍스트에 참여하면서 자연스럽게 영어에 대해 더 배울 수 있습니다.

■ 학습 방법 

The course will run for four weeks, during which time we will read all 13 chapters of the first volume of A Series of Unfortunate Events, that is, The Bad Beginning (1999). Students who struggle with English are encouraged to read the text alongside a Korean language edition.

이 과정은 4주간의 과정으로 A Series of Unfortunate Events의 첫번째 책인 The Bad Beginning의 13개 챕터를 읽을 것입니다. 영어에 어려움을 겪는 학생들은 한국어판과 함께 본문을 읽는 것도 권장합니다.

Students must read the assigned pages (roughly 10 pages per day) every Tuesday-Friday, underlining difficult
words and phrases. First, students must read the entire sentence and try to guess the meaning of the unknown
word, then look the word up in the glossary provided.

학생들은 화요일부터 금요일까지 매일 약 10페이지 정도의 할당된 페이지, 어려운 단어나 구절에 밑줄을 치면서 읽도록 합니다. 먼저, 학생들은 문장 전체를 읽고 모르는 단어의 의미를 추측해 보고 난 후 제공된 용어집에서 그 단어를 찾아보아야 합니다.

Students must practice reading the daily section out loud and will have an opportunity to recite from the novel
during the weekly Zoom meetings (every Monday).

학생들은 매일 읽을 분량을 소리 내어 읽는 연습을 하고, 매주 월요일 줌 미팅 동안 소설을 낭독할 수 있는 기회를 갖습니다.

Every Tuesday, students will receive four ‘daily themes’ (for example, ‘the power of sight’ or ‘greedy grownups’)
and asked to find one example of the day’s theme in their daily reading. They must copy the paragraph with this
example by hand on a sheet of paper and upload a photo of their transliteration onto the Google Classroom.

매주 화요일에 학생들은 화요일부터 금요일까지 4일 동안 읽을 부분에 대한 일일 주제(예컨대 '시각의 힘 또는 '욕심 많은 어른들')를 받고, 매일 읽은 내용에서 해당 주제에 대한 한 가지 예시를 찾도록 합니다. 이 예시에 해당하는 문단을 종이에 적고 이를 찍은 사진을 구글 클래스룸에 올립니다.

On Mondays, students will attend a Zoom meeting. Here they will learn more about the weekly reading and about
key themes and ideas in the book. They will also complete a short reading comprehension quiz (via Google
Forms) with questions about events in the text.

월요일에 학생들은 줌 회의를 통해 주간 독서와 책의 주요 주제, 아이디어에 대해 더 배울 것입니다. 또한 주간 독서 내용에 대해 짧은 퀴즈를 푸는 시간을 가지게 될 것입니다.

At each Zoom meeting there will be a 15-minute Q&A session during which students can ask any questions about the story, vocabulary, or grammar of the week.

매주 월요일 줌 미팅 때에는 15분간의 질의 및 응답 시간을 통해 학생들이 한 주간 공부한 책의 내용이나 단어, 문법에 관하여 선생님과 이야기하는 시간을 가지게 됩니다.

In the final week, students will receive an additional worksheet to complete a short book report so that they can
express their understanding and opinion about the entire novel. Students will upload their book report on the last Monday before the final Zoom meeting.

마지막 주에 학생들은 소설 전체에 대한 이해와 의견을 표현할 수 있도록 짧은 독후감을 쓸 수 있는 워크시트를 받습니다. 이 독후감을 마지막 월요일 최종 줌 미팅 전에 업로드를 합니다.

- 화요일부터 금요일까지는 Google Classroom을 통해 학생들의 독서 진도, 과제 제출 및 문의 사항을 확인합니다.
- 매주 월요일 Zoom 미팅을 통해 주간 학습을 정리합니다.
- 매주 월요일 Zoom 미팅은 영어와 한국어를 병용하여 진행합니다.
- 전체적인 진행은 한국어로 하고 낭독, 토의 및 질의 응답은 영어로 진행할 예정입니다.
- 세부 진행 방향은 첫번째 Zoom 미팅 때 학생들의 영어 수준과 의견을 반영하여 확정합니다.
- 학생들은 편한 대로 영어 또는 한국어로 참여가 가능합니다.
- 원어민 선생님은 (천천히) 영어로 설명하므로 일정 수준의 듣기 능력이 요청됩니다.

2017년 옥스포드대학에서 영문학 박사 학위를 받았다. 현재 국내 국제경영학부의 조교수로 활동하고 있으며 Writing Center 센터장이다. 좋아하는 어린이 소설은 판타지 소설. 어린이들이 소설의 주인공과 교감하며 위험한 퀘스트에 동반하고 어려운 도전을 성공해 가는 과정에서 성장하고 발전해 나간다고 믿고 있다. 이에 <A Series of Unfortunate Events>를 통해 어린이들과 함께 모험을 떠나보고자 한다.

기업에서 20여년간 해외 사업을 진행한 경험을 갖고 있고, 해외 5개국에 주재하며 다양한 문화를 경험했다. 현재 국내 국제경영학부 초빙교수로 활동하면서 800명 외국인 학생들의 대외 활동과 'International Business Plan Competition' 등 외국 대학과의 교류 프로그램을 담당하고 있다. 어린 시절의 영어 읽기가 국제화의 시작이라는 생각을 갖고 있으며 어린이들의 판타지 소설 탐험에 함께 하고자 한다.
